How to find the PSEG Electric Choice ID Number

Despite competitive low electricity prices, promotional offers, and the guarantee of consistent reliable service, the electric switch percentage in the PSEG service area has remained low in comparison to other similarly designed electricity markets in northeastern states and Texas. One of the biggest expected reasons for the low participation rate is the confusion that exists with customers concerning which PSEG identification number to enter on competitive supplier enrollment forms.

In order to process enrollment request, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities requires PSEG customers to provide their POD ID number which begins with the letters “PE” and then is followed by 18 digits. Many PSEG customers fill in their PSEG account number instead of the POD ID number. When this is done the enrollment process is immediately cancelled causing the customer to have to start at square one if they wish to find an alternative supplier.

Another common mistake PSEG customers make is putting in their gas POD ID instead of their electric. For those consumers who receive both gas and electric from PSEG, two POD IDs exist on their PSEG monthly energy bill. One for electric and one for gas. The gas POD ID is very similar to the electric. It starts with the letters “PG” instead of “PE” and usually only has two or three, out of the 18, different digits than the electric POD ID. With such similarities, it is easy to see how consumers often mistake the two numbers. However, when a customer wishing to change their electricity supplier enter in their gas POD ID, the enrollment is automatically cancelled.

Once you find a competitive electric rate offer that you want, it is important to make sure you enter in your PSEG electric POD ID (PE plus 18 digits) and not your account number (12 digits) or PSEG gas POD ID (PG plus 18 digits).

Below is an image of where you can find your electric PSEG POD ID number. Make sure you type in the correct 18 digits, being off just by one will…you guess it, caused your enrollment go get cancelled.
